Donation Day started in Live Oak, Florida, as 鈥淟ove Gift Day.鈥� Dr. Susie C. Holley, wife of the College President at that time, and a small group of women who belonged to the First Central Associations saw a need to provide aid to the college. Dr. Holley, President of the Women鈥檚 Convention of the General Baptist Convention, Mrs. H. B. Miller, President of the Women鈥檚 Convention of the Progressive Baptist State Convention, and Mrs. Annie Bragman, President of the Women鈥檚 Convention of the Missionary and Educational Baptist State Convention, led the drives in their respective conventions.
The idea of soliciting specific items necessary for the operation of the college was developed and implemented. These items included food and clothing for the students. The food drive was so successful that needy families in the area were able to receive a share of the food.
The Women鈥檚 Auxiliaries of the three Baptist State Conventions, held the first Donation Day on Thursday, November 21, 1957. Items for the college dining hall were purchased with the $2,163.20 received in cash donations at this event. When the storage of goods collected became a problem, the Board of Trustees and the women鈥檚 groups decided to solicit donations of money. As a result, 鈥淟ove Gift Day鈥� became 鈥淒onation Day.鈥�
