Program Overview

  • Degree: Master of Science in Reading
  • Credits: 36-48 (depending on track)
  • Program Duration: 2 years (full-time) or flexible part-time options

Three Tracks to Meet Your Needs

Track I – Reading (36 Credits)

Designed for candidates with certification in education and an ESOL endorsement.

  • Core Curriculum: 27 credit hours (e.g., Literacy Development, Reading Diagnosis, Remedial Reading, etc.)
  • Research Core: 6 credit hours
  • Practicum/Field Experience: 3 credit hours
  • Thesis or Comprehensive Exam: 3-6 credit hours

Track II – Reading/ESOL (42 Credits)

For certified teachers who require ESOL endorsement.

  • Core Curriculum: 27 credit hours (e.g., Techniques in Reading Assessment, Adolescent Literature, etc.)
  • Research Core: 6 credit hours
  • ESOL Endorsement Courses: 6 credit hours (e.g., Applied Linguistics, Methods of Teaching ESOL)
  • Practicum/Field Experience: 3 credit hours
  • Thesis or Comprehensive Exam: 3-6 credit hours

Track III – Reading/ESOL (48 Credits)

For candidates seeking initial certification who have an undergraduate or graduate degree in a field other than education.

  • Core Curriculum: 27 credit hours
  • Research Core: 6 credit hours
  • ESOL Endorsement Courses: 6 credit hours
  • Professional Education Courses: 6 credit hours (e.g., Human Growth and Development, Classroom Behavior Management)
  • Practicum/Field Experience: 3 credit hours
  • Thesis or Comprehensive Exam: 3-6 credit hours

Admission Requirements

Full Admission

To be fully admitted into the Florida ¾Ã¾Ã¾«Æ·¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ Graduate Teacher Education Program, candidates must:

  1. Complete the Graduate Application for Admission.
  2. Hold an earned baccalaureate or graduate degree, with a 3.0 GPA in the last 60 hours on a 4.0 scale, from a regionally accredited institution.
  3. Submit official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended.
  4. Provide three (3) completed Recommendation Evaluation Forms.
  5. Submit an essay stating goals for graduate study.

Additional Requirements for State-Approved Programs:

  • Submit passing scores for the CLAST, PRAXIS I, or General Knowledge (GK) Test, or a GRE score of 1000 (pre-2012) or 300 (post-2012).
  • International Students: Transcripts must be evaluated by an approved evaluation service. TOEFL scores may be required.

Conditional Admission

Candidates with a GPA of 2.5-2.99 may be admitted conditionally and must:

  • Earn a minimum 3.0 GPA in the first 12 graduate credit hours at FMU.
  • Provide official GRE scores.
