Blacks In Aviation Museum

Florida ¾Ã¾Ã¾«Æ·¸£Àû×ÊÔ´’s William Lehman Aviation Center was dedicated on Monday, Sept. 26, 1988.

The center is the hub of the university’s Department of Aviation & Safety and offers rigorous programs to educate future aviators, airport managers, and air traffic controllers in the aerospace industry. Students will gain a broad perspective of the various industries in the environments in which they operate and its impact on global transportation and economics.

As our students focus on the future in aviation, it is equally important for them to honor those who paved the way with incredible achievements by overcoming extreme racial and gender discrimination when the invention of the airplane sparked a revolution in technology at the start of the twentieth century. It was a time when aviation was associated with adventure and heroism, but that door of exploration was not open to everyone.

FMU’s Blacks in Aviation: A Legacy Beyond the Skies Museum was established in 2024. The museum was created and designed to evoke pride and a sense of confidence in every student, faculty, and staff member who walks through the museum by telling the stories of those courageous men and women who dreamed, trained, and took to the skies— creating that flight path for today’s Black commercial and military pilots, astronauts, and aerospace professionals.
