Captain Barrington Irving, Jr.

Capt. Barrington Irving Jr. (1983 – Present) In 2007, Capt. Irving at age 23, set two world records as the youngest person and first Black pilot to fly solo around the world. Barrington graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Science with a Concentration in Flight Education from Florida ¾Ã¾Ã¾«Æ·¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ in 2009.

  • Born Nov. 11, 1983, in Kingston, Jamaica, he lived there until he was 6 years old. He grew up in Miami with parents Barrington and Clovalyn Irving. He once believed college football was his only avenue to higher education. But at age 15, Irving met United Airlines Pilot  Gary Robinson, who opened his mind to the idea of pursuing a career in aviation.
  • As a Flight Education major at Florida ¾Ã¾Ã¾«Æ·¸£Àû×ÊÔ´, with just 600 hours of certified flight time, Barrington promised himself he would become the youngest, and the first of African descent, to fly solo around the world.
  • On June 27, 2007, after 130 hours in flight, 97 days, and 26,800 miles with landings in the Azores, Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Egypt, Dubai, India, Bangladesh, Thailand, China, Japan, and Russia, Barrington made good on his promise. While still an undergraduate student at Florida ¾Ã¾Ã¾«Æ·¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ he flew around the world in a custom-built Columbia 400 called Inspiration.
  • In 2014, he established the Flying Classroom, a K-8 STEM+ digital curriculum that challenges students to design innovative solutions to the problems he investigates. He also created the nonprofit Experience Aviation, which offers hands-on, STEM-based programs and career guidance to middle and high school students in several states.
  • Irving currently resides in Miami with his wife and four children.
