Types of Aid

There are many types of aid available to help you pay the tuition and fees at Florida ¾Ã¾Ã¾«Æ·¸£Àû×ÊÔ´. Our Financial Aid Office will work hard to make sure you are informed about the many types of aid available to you and guide you through the process of securing financial assistance.

Grants

Grants: Undergraduate students who have not received a bachelor’s degree may be considered for the grant programs listed below. A current FAFSA is required.

Federal Pell Grant: This is a grant available to undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need. Undergraduate students who demonstrate the greatest need (0 SAI or below) may receive a Pell Grant award of up to $7,395 at 100% and up to $11,092 at 150%. The eligibility is based on the following criteria:

  • The Student Aid Index (SAI)
  • Scheduled Credit Hours per term

*Please note that students who have a greater SAI than 0 has lower grant eligibility. Theoretically, the higher the SAI the lower the eligibility.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant program (FSEOG): This grant is available to undergraduate students who demonstrate exceptional financial need. This award is considered campus-based funding and is awarded based on FMU’s annual funding, which is limited. FSEOG is awarded to PELL eligible students until the fund has been exhausted. 0 SAI or below students receive priority award.

The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (Teach) Grant Program: The TEACH grant is a federally funded program created by the College Cost Reduction and Access Act (CCRAA). The TEACH grant provides up to $3,772 a year in grant assistance to qualified students who plan to become a teacher and meet certain specified requirements. If a student who receives a TEACH grant does not complete the required teaching, the grant must be repaid as a Direct Unsubsidized Loan under the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program.

Effective Access to Student Education Program (EASE): Effective Access to Student Education (EASE) Program is a Florida state grant that provides tuition assistance to undergraduate, degree-seeking, Florida residents attending an eligible private, nonprofit Florida college or university at a full-time status.

Florida Student Assistance Grant (FSAG): The Florida Student Assistance Grant (FSAG) Program is a need-based Florida state grant program available to undergraduate, degree-seeking, Florida residents, who demonstrate substantial financial need and are enrolled full-time in participating postsecondary institutions in the State of Florida.

EASE AND FSAG – Initial Eligibility Requirements to Receive Funding

  • Be a Florida resident and a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen. A student’s residency and citizenship status are determined by the postsecondary institution. Questions regarding such status should be directed to the financial aid office or admissions office of the institution the student plans to attend.
  • Not owe a repayment or be in default under any state or federal grant, loan, or scholarship program unless satisfactory arrangements to repay have been made.
  • Have not previously received a baccalaureate degree.
  • Enroll for a minimum of 12 credit hours per term at an eligible Florida college or university in a baccalaureate degree program.
  • Meet Florida’s general eligibility requirements for receipt of state aid.
  • Not be enrolled in a program of study leading to a degree in theology or divinity.
  • Annually submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), complete and error free.

EASE AND FSAG Renewal Eligibility

  • A renewal applicant must have earned a minimum institutional cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale and earned the equivalent of 12 credit hours for each term an award was received during the academic year.
  • Eligibility is determined at the end of the spring semester of each academic year. Credit hours earned during the previous summer may be counted toward the total number of credit hours required.

Scholarships

FMU Scholarship Opportunities

Florida ¾Ã¾Ã¾«Æ·¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ Office of Admissions will review all new and transfer students for academic scholarship eligibility. If a student meets the criteria, the application is forwarded to the Scholarship Committee for review. Selected students are notified by the Office of Admissions. These scholarships are competitive and there are a limited number each year, based on funding. Students must have a valid, processed FAFSA before scholarships are disbursed.

Returning students are considered for need based and academic based awards based on funding. No additional application is needed. Students must meet SAP requirements for consideration, as outlined on our webpage.

LION TO LION SCHOLARSHIP*

Award: $500 Housing Credit per student recruited for immediate next semester only

Requirements
Student must be in good academic standing and not on any academic or judicial warning or probation. The student must not have any student conduct case in the previous academic year of awarding.

RETURN TO THE PRIDE SCHOLARSHIP*

Award: $1,000 per Academic Year (split between Fall & Spring)

Requirements
Student must have been a former FMU student and identified as a readmit who successfully completed 60 credit hours with a 2.5 GPA, in good academic standing and not on any academic or judicial warning or
probation.

BACK TO THE 305 SCHOLARSHIP*

Award: $1,000 per Academic Year (split between Fall & Spring)

Requirements
Must have been a permanent resident of either Broward, Miami-Dade or Palm Beach County prior to attending a college or university.

*Consideration is on an invitation only basis.  Please note that the requirements do not guarantee eligibility. Rather, it offers the opportunity to be considered for the scholarship. Eligibility for consideration does not guarantee the award. Priority consideration will be given to applicants submitted on or before February 1.

United Negro College Fund (UNCF) Scholarships

Florida ¾Ã¾Ã¾«Æ·¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ is a member of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). We encourage our students to visit and create a profile, complete the general scholarship application, and apply for general and competitive scholarships. Good luck!

National Association of The Bahamas

General Information:

The National Association of The Bahamas provides scholarships of up to US$3,500 per academic year toward the tuition for Bahamian students or students of Bahamian heritage enrolled or enrolling in colleges/universities at the undergraduate and graduate level in the South Florida area.

Scholarships are paid NOT to the student but to the college/university of his/her choice. All recipients are expected to participate in the National Association of The Bahamas – Miami events or activities.

Requirements:

The following criteria are used to determine scholarship winners.

  • Must be of Bahamian descent
  • Must be already enrolled full-time in a degree seeking program or enrolling for upcoming semester/term in an accredited institution of higher education.
  • Academic Merit – based on grades, test scores, honors, awards, and recommendations.
  • All applicants for Undergraduate Scholarships must have at least a 2.5 GPA or equivalent. Graduate scholarships applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Demonstrate financial need.

In addition to this application, you MUST submit all of the following:

  1. Official transcripts of academic records from high school (if a high school student), university, and/or college. Transcripts should be sent directly from the school via email to scholarships@nabmiami.org

  4. A brief statement of intent regarding your career plans and the contributions you would like to make to the Bahamian community upon graduation.

Federal Direct Student and Parent Loans

Federal Direct Student Loans: Federal Direct student loans are a form of financial aid that must be repaid either after a student has graduated or when the student has stopped attending classes at least a half-time (6 credit hours). There are two types of Federal Stafford Student Loans: Subsidized and Unsubsidized. FMU also provides the Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) and a GRAD-PLUS loan for graduate students. ALL FIRST-TIME BORROWERS AT FMU MUST COMPLETE A MASTER PROMISSORY NOTE AND COMPLETE LOAN ENTRANCE COUNSELING AT .

Subsidized Direct Loans are:

  • Low interest borrowed funds that must be repaid by the student. Interest is deferred while enrolled at least half-time (6 credit hours)
  • Interest-free while you are enrolled at least half-time (6 credits) in a degree-seeking program (undergraduate or graduate).
  • Borrowed directly from the federal government.
  • To be used for education-related expenses such as tuition, fees, books, living costs, transportation, and childcare.
  • Payments are deferred for six months after the student graduates or enrolls in fewer than 6 credits. The maximum repayment period is 10 years or longer if consolidated. Loan fees apply. Please see for more information.
  • First time borrowers at FMU are subject to a 30-day hold of their first loan disbursement.

Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loans:

  • Accrue interest while a student is enrolled in school (and during the repayment period).
  • Are borrowed directly from the federal government.
  • Can be used for education-related expenses such as tuition, fees, books, living costs, transportation, and childcare.
  • Payments are deferred for six months after the student graduates or enrolls in fewer than 6 credits. The maximum repayment period is 10 years or longer if consolidated. Loan fees apply. Please see for more information.

Federal Direct Student Loan Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for a Federal Stafford Student Loan, you must:

  • Complete a FAFSA, and all requested documents to complete your file at FMU.
  • Be enrolled in a financial-aid-eligible degree and/or certificate program and taking 6 or more credit hours.
  • Must be making Satisfactory Academic Progress per the FMU Policy (as listed on this webpage)

Federal Parent PLUS Loan: The Federal student PLUS/Grad-PLUS loan can be borrowed by parents of dependent undergraduate students or graduate students to help pay for the student’s education. PLUS loans are typically less expensive than private student loans because PLUS loan borrowing terms are regulated by the U.S. Department of Education.

Direct PLUS Loans:

  • Parents must apply annually and will need their FSA ID and password to complete
  • Applications are processed through the Department of Education who will approve or deny the application based on a review of the parent’s credit history.
  • If a parent PLUS loan application is denied, the dependent student usually becomes eligible to borrow up to $4,000 in additional unsubsidized Federal Direct loan funds. This additional loan eligibility cannot exceed the student’s cost of attendance minus all other aid (including other loans). Unsubsidized loans accrue interest while the student is in school.

Federal Work-Study
FWS is a need-based financial aid program designed to assist students with employment opportunities on campus or within the community (when available). Students must be enrolled full-time (at least 12 credit hours) to maintain their eligibility for this program. This is a regular paid position in which a student will receive a bi-monthly paycheck. The FWS earnings are taxable; however, funds are excluded in the need calculation on the FAFSA.
