Crisis/Emergency

Crisis and Emergency Interventions Provided.

Examples of crisis/emergency:

  • Thoughts of hurting self
  • Thoughts of hurting other people
  • Have not eaten in a few days (not due to illness)
  • Recent victim of a physical or sexual assault
  • Concern over a student鈥檚 whereabouts

Students in crisis who need to be seen the same day can walk into the UCS office and be seen by a counselor. If possible, the student should call ahead and let UCS know that they are coming. The students should also inform the receptionist that they are in crisis and need to see someone as soon as possible.

After Hour Crisis

The University Counseling Services office closes at 5PM on Monday-Friday and remains closed on the weekends. As such, if a student is experiencing a medical emergency, imminent danger and/or threat to self or others, please call Campus Safety at 305-626-3771, or 9-1-1.

UCS encourages students to utilize the Crisis Text Line: 741741, where a crisis counselor will assist you. They are available 24 hours a day. Please find more information about the Crisis Text Line at

If a student is having thoughts of harming/killing themself, please call 9-1-1, Campus Safety at 305.626.3771, or the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 9-8-8 to connect with a crisis counselor. They are available 24 hours a day by phone call or text.

Calling or texting 9-8-8 places you in touch with a crisis counselor in the area code from which the number was dialed or texted from. So, to receive assistance within Miami-Dade and Broward counties, please use a phone with the area codes 305, 786, 645, 954, & 754. All FMU desk phones are enabled to call 9-8-8!
